Music has always been such an important part of my life—I’ve studied it, I’ve composed it, I’ve performed it—and I love using it not only as a form of self expression but also as a form of therapy. There’s something so beautiful about knowing that no matter what experience you’re having, there’s a song (or two or three or five thousand) that can articulate how you’re feeling in that very moment. The ritual of listening to music while processing my emotions allows me to perceive them more clearly, whether I’m feeling heartbroken, euphoric, jealous, longing or even betrayed.

For this first volume of ‘jams by joedujour,’ I wanted to share a collection of songs that introduce you to me, in all the ways that music can introduce oneself. Of course, there’s no body of music that can fully encapsulate me (I’d have to include Britney Spears’ entire discography just to represent my teenage years), but I did pull together 50 songs all from different artists and genres that have meant a lot to me in the past two years.

This playlist tells a story, one that you might relate to yourself, and instead of explaining it here, I’ll let the music do the talking.
