the supplement edit

Beauty begins from within—it’s a phrase we’ve all heard before, but there’s immense truth to it. Our skin and hair health are inextricably linked to the ingredients we choose to ingest and that’s why I’ve incorporated more nutrient-dense foods into my lifestyle. Supplements can fill in the holes in our nutrition that simply can’t be filled by food and water alone.

I started my supplement journey about four years ago with care/of, a vitamin brand that allows you to customize your daily vitamin packs based on your individual needs. From there I started experimenting with biotin and collagen, noticing results in my skin, nails, and hair. I love trying new supplements and herbal remedies to target certain needs, and there definitely is an overwhelming amount of options out there to choose from. Through trial and error, I’ve edited my supplement routine down to these five products. Everyone’s nutritional needs are different, but these items are great inspiration for creating your own supplement starter pack.

A personalized daily vitamin pack can take all of the guesswork out of deciding which supplements to take based on your dietary and health needs. After taking a short quiz, care/of will provide you with a 30-day supply of vitamins. The ones on my roster include: Astaxanthin, Garlic, Magnesium, Ceramides, Rhodiola, and B-Complex. What I love about care/of is that they’re transparent about the research behind each of the vitamins and minerals and their intended effects.

I truly cannot say enough good things about chlorophyll. This organic tonic is packed with ingredients like chlorella, spirulina, ginger, probiotic enzymes, and aloe vera. The ginger-lemon taste makes it super refreshing to enjoy over ice. If I’ve indulged in too many margaritas, I’ll drink this before bed and wake up hangover-free.

Biotin is the best supplement to take if you have any hair concerns whatsoever. After using these capsules for a few months, I noticed a difference in the thickness of my hair as well as the strength of my nails. This supplement also includes Omega 3, 6 and 9 fatty acids—all essential to maintaining overall health.

Collagen is definitely one of the trendiest supplements out there, and for good reason. Having about 10g a day is known to improve skin health as it stimulates your own body’s collagen production, Collagen may also help reduce the appearance of wrinkles, increasing skin’s hydration and elasticity. I love getting my does of collagen in a bedtime beverage and the Vital Proteins x POOSH menu of drinks do not disappoint.

Apple cider vinegar is one of the OG supplements as it’s known to reduce cholesterol, lower blood sugar levels and aid in weight loss. You can take a spoonful a day—like your grandmother probably does—or take it in capsule form, like these ACV pills from Tonik.
