5 inspiring podcasts to listen to

Ever since I started living alone a few months ago I’ve been playing podcasts to fill the auditory space of the quiet apartment I live in. It’s comforting to hear conversation in the background of what I’m doing, whether it’s working, cooking, or doing chores. I’ll admit that I wasn’t expecting to find myself eagerly anticipating new episodes and actually absorbing the content I was listening to. What started as an alternative to listening to music, turned into an opportunity to learn more about topics I was most curious about. These are the podcasts giving me the most inspiration as of late and I hope you’ll find one to love listening to.

Dr. Laurie Santos is a professor at Yale who turned her popular “Psychology and the Good Life” course into a podcast exploring how we can live happier, more fulfilled lives using cognitive science. There are so many “ah-ha” moments in these episodes, and I finish each one feeling like I have more knowledge on how to create my own happiness.

I am a NYT stan through and through, so when I discovered the newspaper had a podcast I was instantly hooked. Listening to The Daily keeps me informed and gives me so much more human context and texture to current events. The conversations in this podcast are thorough, fascinating and match the journalistic integrity of the NYT’s online counterpart.

Emma Chamberlain is undoubtedly the voice of the next generation. The humor and relatable charm she brings to her YouTube videos are exactly what she brings to her podcast. The episodes alternate between light and serious topics including friendship, social media and the pressure to overachieve. It’s impossible not to feel like you’re talking to a close friend when you listen to Emma rant and rave about navigating life’s universal experiences.

If you’re a working professional in this day and age, you’ve probably experienced burnout at some point. This series not only explores the personal effects of burnout, but takes a larger look at how institutions have created an environment where burnout systemically affects us all. I burned (no pun intended) through the episodes and came out with a better understanding of how to dismantle hustle culture.

Dua Lipa is one my favorite pop stars… and now one of my favorite podcasters. Dua uses her unique voice as someone who is frequently interviewed and turns the microphone around to some pretty amazing guests, from British Vogue Editor-in-Chief Edward Enninful to Asian American author Hanya Yanagihara. I love the intention and warmth Dua emanates in each of her episodes.
